Who is Sounds of Spirit Lake?

Sounds of Spirit Lake is a volunteer-driven effort to bring live music to the Menahga community. Over the years, it has grown into a summer tradition that connects neighbors and visitors alike. The series highlights regional musicians who perform old country, bluegrass, and pop, creating a soundtrack that resonates across generations.

Started from a University of Minnesota Business Retention & Expansion Study conducted by the City of Menahga, the Sounds of Spirit Lake committee was awarded a Community Arts Access Grant by the Five Wings Arts Council. The grant continues to assist the committee in reaching the goals of bringing free cultural events to the community, promoting Menahga as a destination for quality events, and meeting local business concerns with an influx of visitors. The grant money, which comes from the Legacy Fund voters of Minnesota approved in 2008, pays for 25% of the total cost of the summer concert series. Free will donations and business sponsorships round out the funding for these concerts.

This event not only entertains but also strengthens community bonds by providing a welcoming space where families and friends gather lakeside each Friday night. Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and/or blankets to listen in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Heritage Fund.
